HINOKI Forest Bathing Locations

I have lived at the foot of Holmbuy Hill for more than 10 years and have always enjoyed the peace and tranquillity it offers, especially in the Millennium Pinetum and Tenningshook Woods. Many of my forest bathing sessions take place on Holmbuy Hill, but I also have sessions in other locations in the Surrey Hills, within 10 miles of Holmbury Hill.

Chantries, Guildford

Chantries, St Martha’s Car Park, Half Penny Lane, Guildford GU4 8PZ

There is magic when walking through the Chantries, especially when the fresh, new beech leaves provide a dappled canopy for dancing light to shine through onto carpets of bluebells. Located about a mile from Guildford town centre, the Chantries is an ancient semi-natural woodland, home to sweet chestnut, oak, beech, birch, holly, sequoias, scots pine, douglas fir and many other conifers. In the spring, the woodland floor is densely carpeted with beautifully scented bluebells.

Holmbury Hill

Hurtwood Car Park 1 (Holmbury Hill), Radnor Road, Peaslake

Holmbury Hill offers beautiful panoramic views across the weald and the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. At 261 metres above sea level, it is also the sight of an Iron Age Fort. The millennium was marked by planting a Pinetum, with over 30 species of conifers, such as the Japanese Cedar, Norway Spruce, Douglas Fir and Wellingtonia. Sunrise sessions start at the top of the hill, where you have a chance to see spectacular colours or be wrapped in a mystical mist, both described as magical and spiritual experiences. The magic continues on to the Pinetum, where the final meditation takes place. Other forest bathing sessions start at a lower viewpoint, also continuing on to the beautiful Pinetum or other woodland areas on Holmbury Hill, where we spend time with Scots Pine, Silver Birch, Oak, Ash and Rowan trees.

Holmbury St Mary

Holmbury St Mary is believed to be the basis for the fictional village of Summer Street in a Room With A View by E.M. Forster, a long-standing resident in the neighbourhood of Abinger Hammer. The setting for HINOKI forest bathing is just on the outskirt of the village centre, near Felbury House, in a larch tree plantation. Here, you can find your connection to the trees while lying under them on soft beds of moss. As you look up, feel your worries soften and escape with the swaying of the larch trees, as if on an ocean floor looking up at magnificent, giant sea kelp.

Holmbury St Mary, Heartwork Coffee Bar

Holmbury St Mary, Heartwork Coffee Bar, Pasturewood Road RH5 6LG

We meet at Heartwork Coffee Bar, then take a short walk to Pasturewood, a privately owned woodland with public access. We start our forest bathing journey in a beech and oak woodland, making our way to scots pine, douglas fir, birch and more beech trees. The final meditation takes place under a very old and beautiful beech tree.

Pitch Hill

Pitch Hill rises from Peaslake and stands over Ewhurst. It is the view which inspired George Harrison to write “Here Comes the Sun,” while staying at the country house of his friend, Eric Clapton. With the South Downs at a distance, it is also the view we see when we have our sunrise forest bathing session here on Pitch Hill. After the sunrise meditation, we slowly walk using sensory invitations to an enclosed Scots Pine and Beech woods, where we continue with our forest bathing sensory journey.

Tenningshook Wood

Hurtwood Car Park 14 (Youth Hostel), Radnor Lane, Holmbury St Mary RH5 6NW

Located at the foot of Holmbury Hill, Tenningshook Wood offers a truly unique forest bathing experience. Meeting at Hurtwood Carpark 14, you will start the journey with grand beech trees with exposed root systems, which have been described as shapes of majestic elephants. We continue on to Tenningshook Wood, an ancient woodland with a rich and complex terrestrial habitat, home to many ancient woodland indicators, such as bluebells, wood anemones, primrose, pendulous sedge and barnacle lichen. The final meditation is under a canopy of beautiful beech trees, which in the spring and summer offers a dance of shadows and sunlight, or what is known in Japan as ‘komorebi’. In the autumn, experience frolicking leaves and in the winter, mesmerising branch fractal patterns.

West Horsley Place

West Horsley Place is an estate of 380 acres. At its centre is the Grade I listed manor house. It dates from 1425 and is currently on Historic England’s Heritage At Risk Register. The house is framed by a five acre walled garden. The 380-acre estate combines a wide variety of arable fields, ley pastures, some semi-improved pockets of grassland, interlinking woodland shaws and old hedgerows with copses and ancient woodland. As well as other features including ponds, an orchard, and parkland trees. The West Horsley Place landscape is in a significant position and potential as part of a connected nature recovery network within the Surrey Hills.

Winterfold Forest is a beautiful woodland in the Surrey Hills with a mix of Scots Pine, Beech, Birch and Oak trees. The main path is part of the Greensand Way, with views of the Surrey Hills and North Downs. The moss covered trees set the scene for a forest fairy tale, soothing the eyes and soul. Like the revered moss gardens of Japan, Winterfold Forest offers a beauty of many shades of green that symbolise patience and endurance. Experience tranquility in the magical forest of Winterfold.
